Halloween Candy Survival Guide for Parents

Halloween is an exciting time for kids to dress up, trick-or-treat, and indulge in sweet treats. But for parents, it can be a challenge to balance the fun of Halloween with maintaining good dental health!
Halloween Candy Survival Guide for Parents

Halloween is full of costumes, trick-or-treating and a lot of candy. At Schaar Dental Wellness in Victoria, TX, Dr. Taylor Schaar shares simple ways your whole family can enjoy it without a cavity. October is also National Dental Hygiene Month, so it's a good time to tighten up daily habits.

Why Halloween Candy Is Hard on Teeth

Candy is loaded with sugar, and the bacteria in your mouth turn that sugar into acid that weakens enamel. The longer sugar stays on your teeth, the more damage it can do. You don't have to skip the fun. The goal is to limit how long and how often teeth are exposed to sugar.

Better and Worse Halloween Candy for Your Teeth

Better choices: chocolate, especially dark chocolate, because it melts quickly and washes off easily. Sugar-free gum can also help because chewing boosts saliva.

Worse choices: sticky or chewy candy like caramels, taffy and gummies, which cling to teeth. Hard candy and lollipops bathe teeth in sugar for a long time. Sour candy is both sugary and acidic.

6 Tips for a Tooth-Friendly Halloween

  1. Eat candy with or right after meals. More saliva means sugar and acid wash away faster.
  2. Set a "candy time." One short session is better than snacking all day.
  3. Drink water afterward. It rinses away sugar and acid.
  4. Brush and floss. Wait about 30 minutes after eating candy to brush, and floss to remove sticky bits from between teeth. Use fluoride toothpaste.
  5. Try a candy trade-in. Offer a small toy or activity in exchange for part of the stash.
  6. Hand out non-candy treats. Stickers, glow sticks and small toys are a safe alternative.

Halloween Tips for Teens and Adults

Candy affects dental work too. Hard candy and sticky treats can chip veneers or loosen crowns, so avoid biting into hard pieces. If you wear clear aligners, take them out before you eat candy and brush before putting them back in. If you do chip or crack a tooth, see our page on emergency dental care, and call us early in the day. We're open Monday through Thursday.

Schedule a Post-Halloween Checkup

A checkup after Halloween catches early signs of decay while it's easy to treat. Schaar Dental Wellness offers dental cleanings and exams for patients from Victoria and nearby communities.

A healthy smile is the best treat of all.
